Although it was somewhat delayed by creative behind-the-scenes changes and this little question of a global pandemic, the Disney + Obi-wan the series is finally preparing to start filming. And Obi-Wan himself (Ewan McGregor to his friends from our non-Star wars galaxy) says he’s “very excited about this”.
McGregor recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote his new travel series The long way to the top. Towards the end of the interview, the conversation turned to Obi-wan, which McGregor says has taken a long time to come – “four, maybe five years” he says since he and Lucasfilm started discussing the idea. The reason he’s so excited is to work primarily with director Deborah Chow, and because he follows the model set by The Mandalorian, which McGreegor thought “was really good”. (Obi-wan will use some of the same pioneering technology.)
In fact, McGregor visited all of The Mandalorian do a camera test for Obi-wan, and, in a surreal moment, found his old Obi-Wan costume waiting for him. As he told the story:
It was a fun time to walk the set, as there were a lot of Mandalorian teams. And I continued, and for me it was a great moment. I walked into the locker room and there were my beige coats, shawls, belts and boots. It was like ‘Oh my god.’ It was my old costume, it was amazing.
Listen, if McGregor is actually trying on Jedi robes, this thing happens and you’re officially allowed to get excited about it. Disney + ‘s Obi-Wan series is slated to premiere in 2022.
