Pregnant shop owner scares off would-be thief with air horn

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — A pregnant store owner in California recently fought back against a would-be thief, and it was caught on camera.

The woman said she was grateful for safety equipment that helped her fend off the suspect in Oakland’s Chinatown.

Eva Liu remembers the details of what happened at her international shipping store on April 25 as if it were yesterday.

Around 1:50 p.m., surveillance video shows the man walking towards a pile of packages apparently with the intention of taking them.

It was then that Liu shouted.

Liu, who is seven months pregnant, fearlessly grabs an air horn from her desk and runs after the man.

“I couldn’t afford to be scared because I wanted to protect these packages from customers,” she said.

As she chases the man, the sound of the suspect throwing the hand sanitizer on Liu’s pregnant wife’s stomach can be heard.

As the man runs away, Liu deploys the air horn.

The sound startled the suspect and also alerted the nearby volunteer security team, The Blue Angels, who reported Oakland police.

Thousands of air horns like the one used by Liu were distributed in Oakland’s Chinatown in February 2021, thanks in part to generous donors and the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce.

“At first people were like, ‘Why should I wear air horns?'” said Carl Chan of the Chamber of Commerce. “But of course with some incidents, like the one you see here, it actually helps our small businesses.”

At a time when many violent attacks on the Asian American community have been filmed, this is an encouraging sign that the horns are working.

“So we were thinking of not only distributing them in Chinatown, but we were also hoping to distribute them to other communities,” Chan said.

Liu and her baby were nearly injured by the bottle of hand sanitizer.

“I was trying to protect my belly so I rolled over and it hit my ribs,” she said.

Despite her actions, she said the job was far from done to keep Chinatown safe.

“I would like to see more police officers, especially officers who speak the language,” Liu said.

The suspect in the Liu case has not been arrested.
