Sony Future Filmmaker Awards – Online Competition Judged by Roger Deakins

Sony launched the first edition of its Future Filmmaker Awards online competition at the end of July, and they have just announced the names of the 2023 judges. The three categories – filmmaker, student filmmaker and future format – will be judged by Justin Chadwick, Nicole Brown, Jeremy Barber and Sir Roger Deakins! If you want to enter the contest, be sure to submit your film by December 13 for a chance to win up to $5,000, Sony camera gear and more.

Online filmmaking contests are a great opportunity to get your name out there, whether you’re a film student, aspiring filmmaker, or a long-time professional.

To continue supporting creators around the world, Sony has launched the Future Filmmaker Awards competition. This online competition rewards filmmakers in six categories spread over three competitions.

Sony Future Filmmaker Awards – general rules

As a new online short film competition, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards offer a unique opportunity for filmmakers and content creators to show off their work and possibly be one of 30 winners. If you would like to participate, you can do so by submitting your film(s) for free until Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Indeed, each participant can register in more than one category and one contest.

In total, there are three competitions: Filmmaker, Student Filmmaker and Future Format. Additionally, there are three categories in the Filmmaker competition and two categories in the Student Filmmaker competition.

A shortlist of up to five entrants per category and one winner will be selected by the judges and announced on the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards website. In short, no less than 30 filmmakers will be shortlisted!

Sony has just announced the jury for the first edition. You will have the chance to show your short film to Justin Chadwick, Nicole Brown, Jeremy Barber and Sir Roger Deakins, one of today’s most honored filmmakers.

Filmmakers competition

The Filmmaker competition is for independent filmmakers and creators around the world. There are three categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction and Environment.

Each Filmmaker contest entry must be between 5 and 20 minutes long and can be shot on any device. Additionally, your film must have been created in 2021 or 2022 and be in English or have English subtitles.

Student Filmmaker Competition

The Student Filmmaker competition recognizes talent that will soon shape the industry. All entrants must complete a film course at a registered institution at degree or diploma level worldwide.

The Student Filmmaker competition has two categories: Fiction and Non-Fiction. The institutions that make up the shortlist are selected by continent to ensure a diverse range of global talent.

Each Student Filmmaker Contest entry must be between 5 and 20 minutes long and can be shot on any device. Additionally, your film must have been created in 2021 or 2022 and be in English or have English subtitles.

Future Format Competition

Finally, the Future Format competition has only one category with a technical brief: shoot your film on a smartphone. Your entry must be between 2 and 5 minutes long, be shot in English or with English subtitles, be shot between 2021 and 2022 and be shot with a smartphone.

Sony Future Filmmaker Awards – awards

Now on to the juicy part: the prices! First, the 30 shortlisted filmmakers will receive a trip to Los Angeles to participate in the awards ceremony and two-day workshop program at the Sony Pictures studio.

Winners of the Filmmaker competition will receive a cash prize of $5,000, a Sony FX9 cinema camera with an FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G full-frame motorized zoom cinema lens, a certificate and a trophy.

Winning student filmmakers can expect to receive a Sony FX6 cinema camera, FE 24-105mm F/4G OSS zoom lens, certificate and trophy.

Finally, the winner of the Future Format will receive a cash prize of $2,500, Sony digital imaging equipment, a certificate and a trophy.

Time limit

As I mentioned before, the competition ends on December 13, 2022. The winners will be announced at the ceremony on February 22, 2023. The two-day workshop will take place on February 23 and 24, 2023.
